Winter activities in New Zealand
Snow sports: Skiing and snowboarding
Mt Ruapehu is about 4 hours by car from Wellington, and is home to New Zealand’s largest ski areas, Turoa and Whakapapa. The season usually starts in late June or early July, so there are good opportunities to add a ski trip before or after the Energy Cultures Conference. Further details can be found here: www.mtruapehu.com
Queenstown is a 95 minute flight from Wellington (the alpine views from the plane are pretty spectacular too), and the ‘Adventure Capital of New Zealand’. Queenstown has a regular bus services to two local ski fields and two additional ski fields, including a cross country resort, a scenic drive away.
There are also a range of other activities available, from bungee jumping, to wine tasting, to Lord of the Ring site seeing tours. Further details about the activities on offer can be found here: www.queenstownnz.co.nz
Whale watching
Kaikoura is on the upper South Island, accessed by a ferry and train from Wellington (www.interislander.co.nz). Whale watching is popular year round, however in winter humpback, pilot, blue and southern right whales pass through on their migration from the Antarctic to the tropics (www.whalewatch.co.nz).
The Air New Zealand website can provide you with details of domestic flights.
The Webjet website also offers flight, car and hotel bookings.
